Are you a Unitarian?

(and not a Unitarian Universalist?)

I became a Unitarian in 1989, officially joined the Unitarian Church of Vancouver in 1991, which is a member of the Canadian Unitarian Council. I was Executive Director of the CUC when it separated from the US-based Unitarian Universalist Association in the early 2000’s. The website for the CUC is cuc.ca, not cuuc.ca.

All of that said, Unitarian Universalist (a phrase I’m told is “trademarked” by the UUA) is being used more and more at my home congregation and in Canadian national circles.

Most recently the final page (51) of the CUC Annual Report is titled “Canadian Unitarian Universalist Congregations”. My home congregation, the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, is listed there.  There are some UU congregations in Canada, but more that remain just plain old Unitarian. And, as it’s likely clear to you at this point, I am also a plain old Unitarian.

I am still a member of the Unitarian Church (that word is under discussion too) of Vancouver which is still a member of the Canadian Unitarian Council. (Note: As of June 22, 2023, I resigned as a member of the UCV and therefore the CUC).

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying connecting with the UK Unitarians through their Unitarian Transformers project. They often meet at 7:30 in the evening; and I’ve attended series on Eco-Spirituality; Spiritual But Not Religious; and Lectio Divina (current series is Hildegard von Bingen readings on the four elements). Yes, I have a mystical, paganish bent, more so than most Unitarians of my vintage.

I’ve also joined the North American Unitarian Association and will be writing an article for their newsletter, The Liberal Beacon, for the July issue.  (Update: I’ve now joined the NAUA Worship Team).

What about you? How many U’s do you have in your identify?

And as someone asked me recently, “Does it matter?” (Clearly it does to me.)

We did not break any Youtube Community Guidelines

Hey, it’s worth appealing! I wasn’t going to bother but after the youtube channel for the Unitarian4thPrinciple group was terminated and pretty serious language was sent, I decided to appeal. In an interest of understanding and sharing anything I learned with others.

Well, we got this response today.

Hi Unitarian 4th Principle,

After taking another look, we can confirm that your channel does not violate our Community Guidelines.

Thanks for your patience while we reviewed this appeal. Our goal is to make sure content doesn’t violate our Community Guidelines so that YouTube can be a safe place for all – and sometimes we make mistakes trying to get it right. We’re sorry for any frustration our mistake caused you, and we appreciate you letting us know.

How this affects your channel

To make this right, we’ve put your channel back up on YouTube.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to us here.

Thanks,
The YouTube team

So that’s nice. While some suspect a random, ot-of-control ‘bot or “the algorithm”, it still seems odd to me that a little channel with one uploaded video and fewer than 200 views would catch anyone’s attention.

I think someone reported it, so I went through the reporting system (as far as I could go without being at risk of ACTUALLY reporting something.

There are many options, and then sub-options and sub-sub options.

And here are some screenshots. Because we were accused of spam (and worse), I followed that option along.

So now you know. What I know. Which isn’t a lot. But if you ever do have something on youtube that’s deleted and you don’t feel you’ve broken any rule, yes, do appeal. (Perhas wait a day or two, as I did.)
